Sewing With Faux Leather Fabrics

If you know anything about sewing, you know that sewing leather can be a task all in itself. However, sewing with faux (fake) leather has its advantages. All types of fabrics have their uses in one way or another and the amount of time you spend on sewing comes down to how comfortable you are with your sewing machine combined with the fabric.

Of course, some people tend to sew anything that will fit underneath the presser foot but when it comes to fabrics like faux leather, anyone can get a little nervous. It is thick yet soft and has a nice polyester woven-style backing. Here are some things you will probably learn when you take on the task of sewing faux leather fabrics:

  • It sews up quite nicely especially if you use the heavy duty needles. The fabric is no match for the strength of the needle.
  • Folded fake leather can crease up plus you cannot iron it even if you wanted to. You can spend hours trying to use a type of pressing cloth but that won’t work either because it is just going to warp.
  • When you first get the fabric, the best thing to do is unfold it and roll it into a tight circle until you are ready to use it. Chances are pretty good that when you are ready to use the fabric, the creases will have all but disappeared.
  • Faux leather fabrics have tricky corners so make sure you pay extra attention to them especially if you are trying to square them.
