Upholstery cleaning can be a very trying time for anyone if you do not know how to perform the cleaning process. It may take you an hour or two and then again, it could take you a matter of minutes. On top of that, sometimes you don’t have the cleaning supplies you need, necessitating a trip to the store.Fortunately, many stains can be helped with common household items. Here are some tips for getting your furniture fabrics cleaned quickly and easily, and with things you have around the house.
- Remove wet spots, as long as they are still moist. Soak up the stain with a cloth or with salt or talcum powder. This should not allow the stains spread further.
- For water-soluble stains, such as pet urine, blood, or raw eggs, you should use only cold water for cleaning. For stubborn stains, you can use a mild shampoo. Do not use hot water as this will cause them to set.
- Dark upholstery can be cleaned with a damp tea leaves and brushed at the same time. Place the leaves on the spot, then brush them (and hopefully the stain) off.
- Grease stains can be treated with carbonated water. Let the water act first and then take up the residue with a sponge. Alternatively you could try to dry the stain with potato flour, if the stain has dried, brush off the residue.
- With wax and chewing gum stains, the following home remedies have been proven: Put ice cubes in a plastic bag and place it on the stain. If the stain has hardened, remove it gently. Then put blotting paper on the remains and warm up the stain with an iron. Use the lowest level though, so as not to harm your upholstery fabric.
- If you get a lot of visits and use your upholstered furniture frequently, you should use colored blankets as they spice up the furniture and protect it from stains of all kinds
