How to Remove Upholstery Fabric Stains

Are you faced with a tough stain on your upholstery fabric? Don’t despair; there may still be a way to get rid of it.

First and foremost, it’s important that you remove the stain as quickly as possible. It may be difficult to get to the stain as soon as it happens, but the longer a stain sits the harder it is to get out of your upholstery fabric.

Before you touch the stain, check out the upholstery fabric’s tag, which will detail how to care for it. The tag will contain a code that details what care should be followed. The code “S” means the fabric needs to be cleaned by a dry cleaner or professional, while “W” means it needs to be cleaned with water. “WS” means clean with water or solvents while “X” means dry vacuum clean only. It’s essential that you follow the care instructions detailed on the tag.

Before tackling the stain, test a small portion of your upholstery before cleaning the entire surface. If the stain is wet, blot out the excess moisture. Allow thick stains, such as sauce, to dry out before you clean the upholstery fabric. Once it has dried, use a bristle brush.

If your upholstery fabric calls for water cleaning, use only clean water and a clean white rag. Cleaning detergent can sometimes be used on tough stains.

To clean upholstery fabrics, identify the code on the product tag and follow its specifications by cleaning the stain accordingly and as quickly as possible.
